The first service at Peace Church was held on Sunday, May 18, 1975 at the Old Gospel Rescue Mission on West Main Street in Spartanburg with 28 people present. Rev. Rodney Wilson was called to be a temporary pastor. The church grew and began meeting in the mobile chapel of the Palmetto Conference which was placed in Green’s Trailer Park in the Cannons Campground Community. We soon outgrew this facility and began meeting in the Cannons Ruritan Building as we built our permanent church at 1195 Old Converse Road in Spartanburg. Rev. Johnnie Bullman was senior pastor and founder of Peace Free Will Baptist Church, serving for over thirty-one years. Rev. Chuck Thornton became our associate pastor in 2003, and later the senior pastor upon Rev. Bullman's promotion to Heaven in 2006.
Pastor Chuck Thornton and his wife Libby are the proud parents of a daughter, Dawn Guy, son-in-law, Jeff; and son, Chip Thornton, and daughter-in-law, Dreama. They are also the proud grandparents of six
grandchildren, Dru, Daphne, Delaney, and Daelyn Guy, and Selah and Jake Thornton.
Pastor Chuck was raised in Spartanburg, graduating from Spartanburg High School and attending Spartanburg Community College. He retired from Pet Dairy after 35 years and became the associate pastor at Peace, attending the Beaver Creek Bible Institute. He became senior pastor in 2006.
He has served faithfully with a pastor’s heart. He is an encourager, a soul winner and has a desire to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ.
He is active in all aspects at Peace. He loves working in VBS, working in the Puppet Ministry. He works with our youth and attends our Seniors Ministry. He loves his congregation and is there for them through sickness, death, weddings or counseling. He is always available for his congregation that he loves.
He is also a family man, being married to his youth sweetheart, Libby Bullman Thornton for 49 years.
His favorite hobby at this time in his life is spending time with his grandchildren. We love this man of God and his helpmate.
Our desire here at Peace Church is to first and foremost exalt the Savior in everything we do. Secondly, our desire is to help guide believers into a closer walk with the Savior. Thirdly, we desire to reach sinners and teach them a “better way to live” through Jesus Christ, our Lord. God has called us all to be witnesses for Him and to share the Gospel to the lost and dying world.
